How to Properly Apply Swedish Paint on Wooden Facades

Swedish paint is a popular and traditional solution for finishing wooden facades, providing excellent protection and an aesthetic appearance. To achieve the best result and long-lasting durability, it is important to apply the paint correctly. In this article, we will review the preparation steps, application technique, and maintenance tips.

1. Preparation work

Material selection

  • Use authentic Swedish paint, such as Falu Rödfärg Original with historically proven quality, whose production method has been used for more than 400 years, preserving the authentic composition.
  • The wood must be untreated or previously painted with Swedish paint. Varnishes, oils, or synthetic paints can hinder absorption and significantly affect adhesion.
  • The surface must be sawn to ensure optimal paint adhesion; it must not be planed.

Surface preparation

  • Remove old, flaking paint with a brush or scraper.
  • Wash the facade with water and soap to remove dust and dirt.
  • Allow the wood to dry completely before painting (optimal wood moisture level: 12-15%).

2. Painting process

When to paint?

  • Choose dry and cool weather, preferably in spring or autumn, when the air temperature is around +10 to +20°C.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and rain during painting and for the next 24 hours.

Paint application

  1. Thinning – For the first coat, thin the paint with 10-20% water.
  2. Brush painting – Use a high-quality natural bristle brush. Always apply the paint in a thin layer to allow better absorption into the wood.
  3. Even application – Work in one direction (from top to bottom) to avoid visible streaks.
  4. Two coats – For better coverage and long-lasting protection, it is recommended to apply two coats with at least 24 hours between them.

3. Maintenance and restoration

  • Inspect the facade once a year, especially after winter.
  • Renew the paint every 10 - 15 years depending on the condition of the coating. For restoration, one coat is sufficient, and the surface does not need to be cleaned of the previous paint layer.
  • Remove dust and dirt with a brush to maintain the durability of the paint.

Swedish paint offers a natural and sustainable coating. For example, Swedish paint Falu Rödfärg Original protects wood for up to 15 years, providing excellent resistance to the harshest weather conditions.
