What is the Swedish paint?
Swedish paint, also known as Falu Red, is a historic and natural paint that has protected and adorned house facades throughout Scandinavia since the 16th century. Falu Rödfärg Original is an authentic and traditional Swedish paint based on natural minerals from the historic Falun mine. The unique pigment of the paint gives it its characteristic red shade, which for decades has served as a hallmark of homes in Sweden.
This paint is not just an aesthetic solution – Falu Rödfärg is also a functional choice, especially suitable for the Latvian climate, offering protection against moisture, UV radiation, and mold.

Why choose Falu Rödfärg Original?
1. 100% natural and ecological
Falu Rödfärg Original is a natural water-based paint containing a unique pigment from the minerals of the historic Falun mine (iron oxide, silicic acid, zinc, copper), a natural flour thickener, and linseed oil as a binder. It contains no synthetic additives, solvents, or chemicals and is safe for health and the environment.
2. Breathable paint – protects wood from damage
The iron oxide pigments and silicic acid in Falu Rödfärg create a diffusion-open protective layer that allows the wood to "breathe" and release water vapor from the wood pores. The paint forms a microporous coating that helps maintain a stable moisture level in the wood, reducing excessive moisture absorption and thus protecting the wood from rot and mold.
3. Long-lasting protection – less maintenance
Although Swedish paint is traditionally considered a more short-term solution compared to linseed oil paints, Falu Rödfärg Original provides up to 15 years of durability, depending on the facade's orientation and weather conditions. For renewal, only one coat is needed, and the surface does not need to be cleaned of the previous paint layer, which significantly reduces maintenance costs.
Important! Unlike industrially produced Swedish paints, which often contain chemical additives, Falu Rödfärg has preserved the traditional production method, ensuring a natural and safe coating.
How to properly apply Falu Rödfärg Original?
- Suitable surfaces: The paint is suitable for rough-sawn wooden surfaces (spruce, pine) or surfaces previously painted with Swedish paint.
- Application conditions: Recommended air temperature between +5°C and +25°C, and wood moisture content below 18%.
- Preparation: If the surface has not previously been painted with Swedish paint, it must first be cleaned of the old paint layer.
- Application: For the first painting, it is recommended to dilute the paint with 10–15% water. After 24 hours, apply a second coat undiluted.
- Brushes: We recommend using a special Swedish paint brush to ensure an even coating and better paint absorption.
Which surfaces is Falu Rödfärg Original suitable for?
Falu Rödfärg is ideally suited for:
- Residential house facades
- Farm buildings, barns, and fences
- Garden structures, gazebos, and fences
Important! The paint is not suitable for windows and doors. For these surfaces, we recommend using natural linseed oil paints.
Today, traditional Swedish paint is also available in other shades, such as black and grey.
