The C.S. Osborne No. 1066 B made in the USA is not just a hammer – it is a specialized tool that has set the quality standard among glaziers and restorers for decades. Its unique shape and excellent balance allow for precise glass fastening with pins (nails), minimizing the risk of scratching or breaking the glass.
Technical Advantages and Construction:
- Forged Steel Head: Made from the highest quality forged steel, fully polished. This ensures the tool's longevity and prevents metal rusting with proper maintenance.
- Precise Geometry: The edges of the hammer head are ground perfectly straight and square. This allows the striking surface (face) to glide closely along the glass plane, driving the glazier's nail (pin) parallel to the glass, even in the narrowest window frame grooves.
- Hardwood Handle: Made from selected hardwood (Hickory or similar durable wood), providing natural shock absorption and a comfortable grip during prolonged work.
- Optimal Weight: The weight of 6 ounces (approximately 170 g) is ideally balanced – heavy enough to drive a nail effectively with one or two strikes, yet light enough to maintain control and avoid damaging delicate wood profiles.
Application in Restoration Process:
- Glass Fixation: Driving nails or glazing points into wooden frames before puttying with linseed oil putty.
- Furniture Restoration: Securing fine moldings and decorative elements where regular carpenter's hammers are too large and cumbersome.
- Historical Glazing: Working with fragile, historical glass (such as blown glass), requiring jeweler's precision.
Technical Specification:
- Head Length: 4-1/4" (10.8 cm)
- Striking Surface Diameter: 11/16" (1.7 cm)
- Overall Length: 12" (30.5 cm)
- Weight: 6 oz (170 g)
- Manufacturer: C.S. Osborne & Co (USA)
