Silver-gray, natural wood protective coating for planed wood surfaces.
Silvertjära is based on ancient Swedish tar oil traditions with over 1000 years of history. Silvertjära Altan is a modern version of tar oil made from traditional ingredients – pine tar, cold-pressed linseed oil, resin turpentine, and mineral pigments.
It penetrates the wood and forms a protective layer that reduces moisture ingress and helps preserve the wood's structure. The coating highlights the natural structure of the wood and develops a silver-gray tone over time.
Why choose Silvertjära?
Many modern facade paints and decking oils are water-based emulsions. If moisture penetrates the coating and the temperature drops below 0 °C, freeze-thaw cycles can promote wear and cracking of the coating.
Silvertjära tar oil contains no water. The linseed oil in its composition penetrates the wood, while the pine tar and pigments form a protective layer that reduces moisture impact and helps protect the wood against rot, mold, pests, and UV radiation.
Silvertjära uses a highly saturated tar oil system that provides a longer lifespan than conventional facade paints and decking oils. Thanks to its composition and penetration depth, it wears evenly and maintains its protective function for many years.
Main advantages:
- Economical coating: unlike synthetic coatings, usually one coat is sufficient.
- Helps preserve wood structure: penetrates the surface and reduces wood fiber separation and further wear.
- Does not peel: does not form a surface film but penetrates the wood, so it wears gradually and does not detach from the surface.
- Wide application: suitable for planed wood surfaces – decks, walkways, boat docks, facades, fences, and garden structures.
- Works on impregnated wood: suitable for pressure-treated boards.
Application
- Preparation: The surface must be clean, dry, and free of synthetic coatings. Dirty surfaces are recommended to be washed with linseed oil soap and water. For new planed boards, a mixture of linseed oil and turpentine (1:1) can be used as a primer.
- Mixing: Stir regularly before use and during work, as pigments may settle.
- Application: Apply a thin layer with a brush in the direction of the wood grain.
- Removal of excess oil (mandatory for horizontal surfaces): after 20–30 minutes, remove unabsorbed oil with a cloth. This step helps ensure even drying.
- Second coat (optional): apply no sooner than after 48 hours if more intensive protection or tone is needed.
- Temperature: apply in dry conditions above +18 °C, avoiding direct sunlight.
