Linseed Oil Paint for Wood - Application
Allbäck linseed oil paint "Linus blue" is a natural linseed oil paint for both interior and exterior wood surfaces, made in Sweden. These paints have been tested for over 30 years under the harshest weather conditions in the Nordic countries and beyond. They are among the purest natural paints on the market, as they contain no petroleum-based solvents or stabilizers.
Allbäck linseed oil paints are suitable for all types of wooden surfaces. Indoors, they are used for painting furniture, walls, ceilings, doors, and floors. Outdoors, linseed oil paints are especially suitable as facade and window paints. They penetrate deep into the wood, do not crack or peel, protect against UV rays, and repel moisture while preserving the wood’s natural properties. They are widely used in restoration projects.
Why Choose Allbäck Linseed Oil Paints?
- 100% natural composition – free from petroleum-based solvents, synthetic stabilizers, and harmful additives.
- Deep penetration into wood – does not form a film, does not peel or crack, allowing the wood to "breathe."
- Low consumption – covers twice the area compared to industrial alkyd or acrylic paints.
- Ideal for historic building restoration – widely used in heritage conservation projects worldwide.
- No harmful fumes – especially safe for indoor use, eco-friendly, and non-toxic.
- Easy to renew and sustainable – can be repainted without sanding or removing the old paint.
Coverage
When painting with natural Allbäck linseed oil paints, 1L of paint can cover 15-25m² of planed wood surface. The consumption may be higher for the first coat.
For exterior applications, we recommend applying three coats since the paint naturally absorbs into the wood and polymerizes, forming a durable and long-lasting protective layer.
Drying Time
Around 24 hours at +20°C. Lower temperatures and high humidity can significantly extend the drying time.
Recommendations
For outdoor applications, we recommend adding the natural mineral supplement zinc oxide (ZnO), available in our store. ZnO should be added at approximately 10-20% of the paint volume (20% for light shades, 10% for dark shades) to provide additional UV protection. ZnO is a natural mineral widely used not only in natural linseed oil paints but also in cosmetics (sunscreens), pharmaceuticals, and other products.
We also recommend adding ZnO if the painted surface will be subject to heavy use – such as floors, tabletops, and cabinets – to ensure an even more durable coating.
Surfaces exposed to direct weather conditions (windows, terraces, floors, garden furniture, fences, etc.) should be primed at least once with cold-pressed Allbäck linseed oil before painting to provide additional moisture protection.
Color Shade
The color on the screen may slightly differ from the actual shade on the surface after application, depending on factors such as lighting or the type of wood. We recommend applying the paint to a small area first to ensure the chosen shade works in your setting.

Weather and Environment
Painting is permissible if the air temperature is at least +12 °C and the relative humidity is below 80%. Do not paint wet surfaces, freshly sawn timber, or wood with a moisture content exceeding 14%.
Allbäck paints can also be applied under direct sunlight.
Surface Preparation
Clean the wooden surface of dust and small wood particles with a brush. If the surface is dirty, wash it with linseed oil soap and wait until it is completely dry.
❗ If the wooden surface has been previously painted with synthetic paint, the old paint layer must be completely removed.
Surfaces exposed to direct atmospheric impact (terrace floors, garden furniture, fences, etc.) should be primed at least once with cold-pressed Allbäck linseed oil to provide additional moisture protection. For this purpose, heat the linseed oil before use in a water bath to approximately +60 °C. Once the linseed oil primer layer is completely dry, the surface is ready for painting.
Knotty areas on the wood surface should be sealed with two coats of shellac to prevent resin bleeding and ensure an even color tone. Once the shellac layer is dry, smooth the treated areas with fine sandpaper, and the surface is ready for painting.
Preparing the Paint Before Use
Stir the paint thoroughly before use. If necessary, the paint can be diluted with boiled Allbäck linseed oil, adding up to 5% of the total volume.
❗ Allbäck linseed oil paints must not be diluted with turpentine or other solvents, as these may contain chemical additives.
For outdoor work, we recommend adding the natural mineral additive zinc oxide (ZnO), available in our shop. ZnO is added to the paint at a rate of approximately 10-20% (20% for light tones, 10% for dark tones) to provide extra UV protection. ZnO is a natural mineral widely used in the production of natural linseed oil paints, as well as in cosmetics (sunscreens), pharmaceuticals, and other products.
We also recommend adding ZnO for surfaces subject to intensive use—such as floors, tabletops, and cabinets—to ensure an even more durable coating.
Painting
Take a brush and apply the paint to a small area of the surface. Then, rub the applied paint thoroughly in the direction of the wood grain, and subsequently perpendicular to the grain across the entire width. Finally, smooth the finish with the brush in the direction of the grain. The paint must be applied in a thin, even layer.
The paint should be stirred regularly throughout the painting process.
Recoat the surface only once it is completely dry.
Linseed oil paint does not just color the surface; it naturally absorbs into the wood and polymerizes, creating a durable protective layer against moisture and mold. For full protection, we recommend applying 3 coats. The second and final coats should be applied thinly, only in the direction of the wood grain.
Drying Time
The average drying time is 24 hours at a temperature of +20 °C. Drying time depends on several factors—humidity, temperature, and sun exposure—and can increase significantly at lower temperatures or higher humidity. Drying time after the second and third coats may be longer. Always ensure the paint is completely dry before the next application.
Brushes for Linseed Oil Paints
We recommend using Allbäck brushes available in our shop, or use stiff natural bristle brushes suitable for linseed oil paints.

Between painting sessions, the brush should be stored in a container of linseed oil, with the bristles fully submerged. In this way, brushes can be stored indefinitely, even at temperatures below zero. Wipe the brush with a cloth before painting.

❗ Do not use turpentine or other solvents for brush storage, as they may contain chemical additives.
After finishing the work, wash the brush in warm water with linseed oil soap or regular soap and dry it with a cloth.
Storage
Store out of reach of children, tightly closed in an upright position. Once opened, containers must be sealed tightly for future storage. We recommend storing at room temperature, although storage at temperatures below zero is permissible. Protect from direct sunlight. Do not store near food.
During long-term storage of an opened container, natural oxidation may cause thickening; this should be strained out before reuse.
Shelf Life
Allbäck linseed oil paints do not have a set expiration date as long as they remain in their original, unopened packaging.
Cleaning
If linseed oil paint gets on hands or objects, we recommend using linseed oil soap, regular soap, or natural balsam turpentine for cleaning.

Attention!
If you have used a cloth or sponge soaked in linseed oil or linseed oil paint during the painting process, it must be soaked in water or burned immediately after use! Linseed oil undergoes a thermal reaction with the fabric, which can cause the material to spontaneously combust.
