Natural pine tar with a brown to dark brown hue — deeply penetrates wood, protects, and gives an authentic, classic appearance.
Furutjära is a premium quality natural Swedish pine tar produced by Claessons Trätjära AB in Gothenburg. It is derived from the roots of resinous pine wood, ensuring pure, concentrated tar without any additives.
Pine tar has a very long tradition of wood protection — it has been used for over a thousand years in Scandinavia to protect wooden buildings, boats, and roofs. The product contains no solvents, biocides, or synthetic additives — just pure pine tar.
Why choose Furutjära?
Wood exposed to sun, rain, and wind gradually loses some of its natural resins, becomes gray, and starts to crack. Pine tar deeply penetrates the wood and helps restore its natural protection while forming a durable protective layer. Natural pine tar has antiseptic and antibacterial properties that help protect wood against rot and mold.
Main advantages:
- 100% natural product: pure pine tar without any additional additives.
- Natural tone: brown to dark brown, which deepens and becomes more expressive over time.
- Deep penetration: saturates the wood from within and enhances its resistance to moisture and mold.
- Breathable coating: allows the wood to naturally regulate moisture.
- Longevity: reapplication is usually needed every 8–10 years depending on the surface's exposure.
Application
- Wooden facades and log houses
- Wooden roofs (shingles, shake roofs)
- Wood cladding and boards
- Fences, utility buildings, and sheds
- Restoration of historical buildings
- Immersion of untreated wood before assembly
Application
- Conditions: apply in dry, warm weather on completely dry wood. Before application, the tar needs to be heated in a water bath to ~50-60 °C — it becomes more fluid and absorbs better.
- Preparation: the surface must be clean, dry, and free from synthetic paints or varnishes. Dirty surfaces should be washed with linseed oil soap and water, then allowed to dry completely.
- Application: apply with a brush (a natural bristle brush is recommended). A sprayer can also be used, but the surface must then be worked over with a brush. Stir the tar regularly during work.
- Coats: usually, 2 coats are needed. When applying the first coat, it is recommended to dilute the tar with balsam turpentine (10-20%) to improve absorption into dry wood.
Consumption
| First coat | 2–4 m²/L |
| Second coat | 4–8 m²/L |
Actual consumption depends on the type of wood, surface treatment, and weather conditions.
Drying time
From one day to several weeks — depending on temperature, sun, wind, and wood absorption capacity. The tar dries slowly, ensuring deep penetration.
Maintenance
- South and west facades: reapply every ~8 years
- North and east facades: every ~10 years
- Surfaces not exposed to direct atmospheric effects may have a longer interval
Cleaning
Clean tools with alcohol (ethanol). Mineral spirits (white spirit) do not dissolve the tar. Tar can be washed off the skin with soap and warm water.
Additional information
Furutjära is a natural product, so the tone and viscosity may slightly vary between batches. The final result largely depends on the type of wood — sawn wood absorbs more and appears darker than planed wood.
