Description

Natural tar oil composed of pine tar and cold-pressed linseed oil. Suitable for terraces, facades, fences, garden furniture, boat docks, and wooden shingle roofs.

Tjärolja 20/80 is a traditional wood protection product based on historically used ingredients that were widely applied in 19th-century Sweden for the protection of boats, shingle roofs, and facades. The product name reflects its composition: 20% pine tar and 80% cold-pressed linseed oil. It contains no solvents, added pigments, or synthetic additives. The oil penetrates the wood fibers, reduces moisture absorption, and forms a protective hydrophobic layer that helps preserve the wood structure.

Why choose Tjärolja 20/80?

This is a traditional oil-tar system that works on the principles of wood and oil interaction. Cold-pressed linseed oil penetrates the wood and polymerizes within its structure, while pine tar enhances surface hydrophobicity and reduces moisture ingress. The product contains no water, which could promote freeze-thaw damage, and no petroleum-based solvents. It consists of only two natural ingredients that have been used in wood protection for over a century.

Main advantages:

  • Versatile application: suitable for terraces, facades, shingle roofs, boat docks, walkways, and garden furniture.
  • Deep penetration, non-film forming: linseed oil penetrates wood pores, reducing drying and cracking without forming a surface film.
  • Easy maintenance: the surface wears gradually, so there is no need to remove the old layer before reapplication.
  • Natural tone that changes over time: freshly applied coating gives wood a warm amber tone, which gradually transitions to a silvery gray under UV exposure, maintaining protective function.
  • Free from petroleum solvents, low VOC: VOC content below 200 g/L (EU A/e category limit 400 g/L). Contains no benzene or aromatic hydrocarbons.

Application

  1. Preparation: The surface must be clean, dry, and free of synthetic coatings. Dirty surfaces should be washed with linseed oil soap and water, then allowed to dry completely.
  2. Shaking: The product may separate. Shake thoroughly before use and stir regularly during application.
  3. Application: Apply a thin layer with a brush in the direction of the wood grain. For dense wood, the oil can be gently heated in a water bath (30–40°C) to improve penetration.
  4. Removal of excess oil (mandatory for horizontal surfaces): after 20–30 minutes, remove excess oil with a clean cotton cloth. Excess oil can slow drying.
  5. Second coat (optional): for very dry wood, a second coat may be applied after 24–48 hours once the first coat has dried.
  6. Temperature: apply in dry conditions when the temperature is at least +18°C. Avoid direct sunlight and strong winds.
